Naturally, we learnt a few tricks on how to spend our money wisely (or not spend at all). Here are the top ten:

Day of cycling, canoeing and playing volleyball: 9 euros!
Velo, canoe et volleyball : 9 euros!
1. Find a free walking tour; a lot of the major cities have 'alternative' tours that are free of charge. They don't take you to the churches and statues, they show you the local hangout places and where to find the cheapest bargains. It's really refreshing to explore the 'real' city!
1. Trouver des guides gratuits; plusieurs grandes villes ont des visiter "alternatives" qui sont gratuites. Pas d eglises ou des statues, ils vous emmenent dans les endroit branches du coin et vous montrent ou trouver es meilleures affaires. C est tres interessant d explorer la 'vraie' ville.
2. Rent bicycles; Instead of staying in the city where you spend loads of money to kill time, why not take a full day trip out on a bicycle? You cover loads more ground with two wheels, avoid traffic and bus tickets, plus it's a good way to burn off the cheap junk you ate the night before! Personally, I find the day goes by so much quicker with bikes. You see tons!
2. Louer des velos; plutot que de rester en ville ou vous depensez plein d argent pour passer le temps, pourquoi ne pas opter pour une sortie a bicyclette? C est beaucoup plus rapide en deux roues, vous evitez les bouchons et les tickets de bus, et en plus c est un bon moyen d eliminer les calories avalees la veille! Le temps passe beaucoup plus vite avec un velo et vous en prener genrallement plein la vue.
3. Go to the supermarket/open market and picnic; This is specific to the warmer months (unless you have a hostel with a kitchen!). It has become a daily habit for Antoine and I to look for supermarkets than restaurants. We love looking at the aisles of fresh food and finding amazing chocolate-crunch muesli. It's so nice to picnic in a park or on the steps of a museum. You can people watch, sun tan, and avoid tipping!
3. Aller au supermarche pour organiser un picnic; Tout particulierement pour les mois les plus chauds (a moins qu il n y ait une cuisine dans votre auberge). C est devenu une habitude quotidienne pour nous de chercher un supermarche plutot qu un resto.
4. Make friends in the hostel; Start a conversation with another backpacker and you'll find hours of entertainment just chatting and sharing tips from personal experiences. The hardcore backpacker will have loads more advice than me!
4. Faites des amis a l auberge; Commencez une conversation avec un autre baroudeur et vous aurez des heures de divertissement simplement en parlant et en partageant les tuyaux d experiences personnelles. Le vrai baroudeur aura beaucoup plus de conseils que nous!
5. Free entrance days for sights; You may be lucky and arrive in a city on a day where entrance to a museum, gallery or church is for free!
5. Jours d entree gratuite pour les visites; Avec un peu de chance vous arriverez dans une ville ou l entree d un musee, d une galerie ou d une eglise est gratuite!
6. Whip out your student cards; This applies to almost everything! Buses, trains, cinemas, sights, or even your hostel may give you loads of discount with your student card. When in doubt, just try!
6. Degainer sa carte d etudiant; Cela s applique pour presque tout. Les bus, les trains, les cinemas, les visites ou meme votre auberge vous accordera des tonnes de discounts avec votre carte d etudiant. En cas de doute, il suffit d essayer!
7. Avoid 'market square' spending; The most expensive part of city! A trap.
7. Eviter les depensessur les places du marche; L endroit lle plus cher de la ville. Un vrai piege a touristes.
8. Go to toilets in hotels (or in the wild...); Apparently, needing to pee is not a basic human right. Almost all 'public toilets' in the cities we've been to charge money. Save money here by going to the toilets in hotel lobbies. Just look like a guest, walk in, smile at the receptionist and pick a corridor. The key is to not look guilty!
8. Aller aux toilettes dans les hotel (ou dans la natures...); Tres souvent, les toilettes plubliques sont payantes. Ce ne sont pas de grosses depenses, mais quand comme Jen vous etes une filles, au final ca peut revenir tres, tres cher!
9. Free wifi; If you have a computer, you will undoubtedly find free wifi somewhere in the city. It is usually in the tourist center, or your hostel. You may even pick up the unlocked wifi from the bar next door.
9. Wifi gratuit; Si vous avez un ordniateur, vous trouverez certainement u signal gratuit dans la ville. Les plus souvent, ca sera dans les maisons du tourises, ou simplement dans votre auberge. Ou vous pourrez eut etre capter le signal du bar d a cote.
10. Just relax, enjoy the small pleasures; If you look carefully, you'll find cool things everywhere. The strange graffiti on the wall, the old man in the park examining his ice cream, and the crazy pigeons stalking the little girl eating a bun - don't just focus on the places in your guidebook. Just relax!
10. Apprecier les petits plaisir; Si vous regardez bien, vous allez trouver des trucs sympa partout. Les scenes les plus anodines sont les plus interessantes, ne vous limitez pas simplement a votre guide4 touristiques. Relax Max !
